Guess who’s stayed true to a commitment she made and not cheated once, not even one little time? This girl. I’m elated to report that I’ve been 100% vegan all week without one little slip, and actually kind of loved it.
I’ve been mulling over how I want to go about keeping you all in the loop on how I’m getting on as a temporary vegan. I thought about perhaps writing one great big summary at the end of the month, but that would get too boring too quickly (for me and for you) and I might forget important thingies from the beginning of the month. Therefore, I’ve decided to give you weekly updates broken down into nice little short-attention-span-appropriate chunks, because I know a lot of you are genuinely interested in how this whole plantbased diet thing works. So, here goes..
The closest I’ve come to cheating this week..
Last night. I went to the pub, had more G&Ts than a person should have on a weeknight and came home to a house with zero delicious food for me to eat. I so nearly ordered Dominos, like I filled my basket with a large Ranch BBQ and 7 BBQ wings and had my hand hovering over “checkout”.
Instead, I made what I have dubbed the “sad vegan pizza wrap”, named for it’s subtle taste of actual depression. A tortilla wrap smeared with tomato puree, piled with sucky vegan cheese and grilled for a bit. The worst. I’m going to buy in delicious frozen potato products (hello hash browns) to satisfy the alcohol induced hunger I’m bound to experience again this month.
The best thing I ate this week
I’ve eaten some really good stuff this week, so this is not an easy question to answer, but I think I’ve got to go with vegan fajitas. It’s like this: peppers + onions + puy lentils cooked in Old El Paso fajitas seasoning, guacamole, refried beans, salsa, cashew queso. All wrapped up in a tortilla. It’s a legitimate bundle of joy.
I keep saying I’ll post the recipe this week. I promise you’ll have it soon, but I’ve been stupidly busy this week. Sorrryyyy.

The biggest challenge this week
I’ve had a real think about this, and I can’t honestly recall a time in the last 7 days where I’ve felt truly like “god damn it this is hard”, perhaps I’m still in a honeymoon period with veganism and next week this section will be filled with bitchy complaints.
A few basic meals from week 1
Top left: the vegan fajitas I was going on about above, it really is good, I’m going to try and shoot it tomorrow if I get a chance because I can’t wait to share it with you!
Top right: jus-rol puff pastry (yep, that’s vegan, you’re welcome) topped with gooey caramelised onions, roasted peppers and olives.
Bottom left: spaghetti with caramelised onions, garlic and sage.
Bottom right: chips. It was New Year’s Day so don’t even think about looking at me like that.
Vegan finds worth sharing
A friend recommended vegan rocky road that can be found in the Sainsbury’s free-from aisle and it’s been a total life saver when I’m feeling all hashtag treat yo self at tea time. I think I’m gonna pick up the millionaire shortbread by the same brand next time I go to the supermarket.
Anything else to note..
I guess I should touch on the fact that I feel great. I mean I don’t wanna go all born-again Gwyneth on you guys but I do feel physically good, there’s no denying it. I’m not bloating at all and I don’t have the urge to overeat really, I’m also shifting the Christmas pounds quicker than I have in previous years. Placebo effect? Entirely possible, I’ll let you form whatever judgement you like best.
Also, I’ll admit that ethically I’m feeling all cosy in my brain. This week, I haven’t contributed to the side of the food industry that causes genuine animal suffering (you can roll your eyes if you like, but it’s a point we can neither deny or ignore), and that side of the food industry has been making me feel increasingly uncomfortable for a while now. So yeah, it feels nice to have just quit it for a bit.
