What’s the deal with the new vegan Quorn burgers?

New Vegan Quorn Burgers

I don’t know how well versed you lot are on the topic of Quorn. In case you didn’t know: up until very recently, Quorn products were only suitable for vegetarians, not vegans. It did always seem a little nonsensical to have such a huge meat alternative company not cater to that audience but they’ve now officially jumped on the bandwagon with their new range.

A new line has been added, clearly marked vegan, and stacked into the freezer at your local supermarket (or Waitrose and Asda, at least). I thought it was my duty to give one of them a try and report back, seeing as I’m now your new vegan correspondent. (Despite the fact that I’m 100% grossed out by most of their stuff, I’m looking at you fake chicken pieces).

To set the scene: I had one for breakfast this morning (for the third time). Today I made it a little fancier because I knew I’d be showing you lot I’d just die if you thought I was basic. Standard burger bun, Alpro plain yoghurt (too sweet and no substitute for mayo but we’re working on it), lettuce, quorn burger, aubergine bacon and a little bit of ketchup. Pretty great Friday breakfast.

They cook straight from the freezer in 19 minutes, giving you enough time to muck about with whatever else it is you’re doing, which I’m into. I really bloody like these. You know my stance on meat substitutes in general, I think they’re annoying and gross. But sometimes, if I’ve got a little hankering for a McDonald’s mayo chicken or Birds Eye chicken space shapes, this is the exact thing I want in my mouth.

It has the same(ish) texture as processed freezer breaded chicken (don’t pretend you never feel like eating it, it’s just you and me here right now and I’m not about to judge you) and the flavour is legit good. I’ve seen a lot of people moan about them being way too spicy and this has left me really very confused. When I unwrapped them I was all “oh sh*it, are those chilli flakes in that breadcrumb mixture, is this really gonna be too spicy for me?” but it’s mild if anything – and I’m no brave bald white man when it comes to spice, I’m a korma girl if you get me.

Should you eat one every day? Probably not, I haven’t even looked at the ingredients because meat substitutes are creepy and I don’t need to know that stuff right now. Is it worth grabbing a box and chucking it in the freezer for emergencies? You’re damn right it is.

Oh PS – this is my first blog post shot entirely with my iPhone in a super chilled out, no stress way, and I kind of had the best time. How do we feel about this?

Nah. Don’t fancy the burger Cate. But which iPhone and did you do any editing? These are good pix. Im thinking of going over to the dark side.

  2. These photos are so good, I am always amazed people can do things like this with a phone 😍
I definitely need to try these burgers too. When I used to be veggie I was crazy for the Quorn popcorn chicken so these sound right up my street!

  3. Um, if these are iPhone pics then I am mightily impressed! So good. Also totally feel you on the ‘korma kinda gal’ situation. And the ‘processed freezer chicken’ craving 🙂 Lovely post! x

  4. I liked these, but they’re not something I could eat regularly. I thought they were spicy, but not as bad as the veggie quorn hot and spicy breaded pieces – those are torturous. But yeah, I thought these burgers were pretty good. I’m not a big fan of the quorn ‘chicken’ pieces really.
