How Being Too Lazy Led Me To Fail Veganuary

Last year, I was almost 100% vegetarian before embarking upon temporary veganism. This year, I’d had two months of hardcore meat consumption in advance of the assignment. It transpires that this little difference makes for a dramatically altered experience.

This year, my cravings are more frequent and intense, I’m hungrier all the time and – most importantly – I’m not getting enough of the foods I need because I didn’t bother to sit down and pay proper attention to how to replace the things I was getting from meat and dairy with plant based sources.

Additionally, because I’m more constantly pushed for time than I was last year, and I’m not putting enough effort into planning meals in advance, I’ve found myself sat in front of plates like this at work every now and then:


If you’re going to go vegan, you pretty much need to get used to the idea that you have to sit and spend real dedicated time to thinking about what you’re going to eat. I’ve not done that this year. If you find yourself in a dashing through the supermarket when you’re super tired or busy or distracted situation, it’s not going to end well – and you’re not going to get what you actually need from a meal. Trolley dashes have left me with just a plate of rocket for lunch at work, and a dollop of mashed potatoes served with gravy at my Nan’s.


This has, at times, made me miserable. I’ve been hangry and snappy despite having eaten recently enough too many times to count. I was so fed up yesterday that I ordered a Lumberjack’s veg wrap with cheese. I decided that was what I needed to cheer me up, and nothing else was going to do it.

In fact it did cheer me up, and cheating gave me the jolt I needed to understand that I wasn’t doing Veganuary properly, and that I need to sit down and work out how I’m going to do it better for the rest of the month. So this post is a slap on the wrist, and a vow to myself and you that I’m going to step my game up a little.

Before I go, I want to remind you of some of the amazing and fulfilling food I’ve had this month, because I feel I’ve been a little hard on it in this short and sweet and self-punishing post.

    My tip is don’t punish yourself as veganism is a heavily flawed concept and not healthier or more sustainable . So you only failed at persisting in self induced misery. I see that as a win. It’s only a fail if you continue to beat yourself up. So stop x

  3. First of all, the meals you’ve had this month look absolutely great. They’re incredibly colourful, and I see lots of balance. That, for me, is the healthiest thing you can be. I get veganism, I honestly do, I’ve tried and I strive to make my meals as cruelty free as possible. But sometimes it isn’t as possible as I’d like, like you said, it takes so much prep and planning. Being vegan shouldn’t be a diet, you shouldn’t be punishing yourself for ‘failing’ or being ‘lazy’. It’s a complete lifestyle change and I applaud those who can change that, but don’t hurt yourself (physically / mentally) if you slip up now and again. Keep doing what you’re doing ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks Jenn! I think the language I used was potentially too harsh on myself it’s true – but veganism does feel so militant sometimes and a few actual vegans expressed disgust at this blog post!

      • You can never make everyone happy, but at least you’re trying. It’s not an instant transition, becoming vegan, at least not for a lot of people. Intentions are there but totally changing your lifestyle is a massive thing. It takes time. You need to do what’s best for your body, and for your mind, before you start anything else. What works for one person, might not work for you, but I think you’re doing well to make that change.
