Crepes a La Creme De Marrons

Pancake Day is at last mere days away. On February 28th, it’s finally time to grab a whisk the moment you come home from work and whip up a batch of battery goodness. I’ve had some pretty killer pancake ideas in my time (I think my favourite will always be last years marzipancakes) but this year, I decided to take inspiration from my recent trip to Dieppe, France. In Dieppe, there was an outdoor crepe stall almost every few paces. They were made fresh outside restaurants, cafes and dessert joints, and creme de marrons was on every menu. Creme de marron (which I, of course, had to use Google Translate to decipher when I first saw it) means chestnut paste. This, it turns out, is incredibly easy to make. Vacuum packed cooked chestnuts (I had a packet in the house leftover from Christmas) are boiled gently with sugar, water and vanilla for about half an hour. The chestnuts go into a blender with a little of the syrup at a time until you reach a …

Tomato Jam and Avocado Pancakes

Spicy Tomato Jam and Avocado Savoury-ish Pancakes

We covered sweet pancakes at the beginning of the week, and we covered them very, very well indeed. So I think it’s about time we wandered into savoury pancake territory, don’t you? I firmly believe (for today, at least) that it would be cruel to serve pancakes without just a little sugar though, so we’re having tomato jam with our avocado. Spicy, sweet, delicious tomato jam. Ugh, I can’t wait for you to try these, really I can’t. A lot of tomato jam recipes will tell you to peel your tomatoes. I’m really sorry, but I just can’t be arsed. I don’t think it’s made a huge difference. You can go ahead and choose a different jam recipe for this if you’d like, I’m not gonna stop you putting more effort into your food, but this one works just fine. I promise. Might I be so bold as to suggest a new Pancake Day tradition? As you’ll soon learn in Jess’s Pancake Day post, I have a recently created ritual that suits me down to …

Marzipan Pancakes with Blueberry Maple Syrup and Toasted Coconut

Marzipancakes with Blueberry Maple Syrup and Toasted Coconut

This post is in collabz with Seasonal Berries Happy my birthday month to you! We pushed through January together like absolute soldiers, and if you’re reading this then you too have made it through to the other side. The happier side, the side that’s just a little closer to spring and sunshine and, most notably in my world, the side on which I turn 21.. On February 13th, I will reach an age that makes it impossible for me to argue that people who refer to me as an adult are wrong. At 18 the world is all like ‘whatever, you can drink, call me when you’ve spent three hours on hold to HMRC and we’ll talk’. The years after that all blur together in a late teen but not-quite-proper-actual-grownup haze. But I think now, at this point, I’ve just got to accept it. This is adulthood. I’ve arrived, and I can’t leave. We can talk more about the sense of impending doom that I already feel about the passing of time a little closer to …
