Review | Bodean’s BBQ, Covent Garden

Yesterday afternoon, Tom and I went to see The Lion King at Lyceum Theatre. It was one of the most spectacular shows I’ve ever seen. If you’re one of those people that’s always wanted to go but never gotten around to it, book your tickets now. We’re not here to talk about The Lion King though, we’re here to talk about where we found to eat afterwards, that’s what you all come for. Having absolutely no knowledge of where to go in London, I asked the internet for recommendations close to the theatre. Beth on Twitter suggested Bodean’s BBQ. I saw the word BBQ and noted that it was literally a two minute walk from the theatre and was immediately sold. Bodean’s is clearly doing well, with 8 locations across London and the Covent Garden restaurant being almost fully booked when I called to secure our table. It was founded in 2002 by Andre Blair, who hails from Kansas and has undoubtedly brought that southern states of America feel to the heart of London. As …

Broccoli, Asparagus and Mint Quiche

What picnic blanket, BBQ buffet or garden party would be complete without quiche? Nobody has quite decided whether it originates from France, Germany or England, but one of us sure got it right. One of the most versatile pastries ever, it can be enjoyed stone cold on the beach whilst you cower behind a windbreaker, lukewarm in the park while you wonder why the coolbag isn’t working, or piping hot with some salad indoors when the June showers hit. It has something of a reputation for being very, very unhealthy. This is fair enough, it’s butter, milk, eggs and cheese – sometimes even cream. But I’ve done my best to take the calorie count down a notch and made up for the butter indulgence by filling it up with green stuff. for the pastry: 170g wholemeal flour a pinch salt 100g butter (I used goat butter) 1 egg yolk 2 tbsps cold water                        for the filling: 3 eggs (and the white of the egg …

Lets talk about sides (baby)

It’s nearing BBQ Season for the braver souls here in the UK, and I’m not about to tell you that chicken wings and burgers are going to boost your metabolism. So to join in the BBQ vibe yet remain in the constraints of this week’s theme, I thought I’d share an exceedingly healthy side dish that you can add to your delicious rack of ribs and know that you’re consuming something of use to your body. Homemade coleslaw This recipe was inspired by the most amazing take away joint ever to exist, Pizzaface. If you’re lucky enough to be a citizen of Brighton, too, you have to try this place. In a nutshell, it’s beyond restaurant quality pizza delivered right to your house. Anyway, they do this great seasonal coleslaw that’s herby and crunchy and delicious so I’ve tried to recreate it, pretty successfully I might add. Coleslaw is notoriously fattening because it contains a few artery clogging ingredients – namely full fat cream, so this recipe calls for 0% yoghurt (the brand I use …
