Rye Waffles with Banana and Salted Caramel

Rye Waffles with Banana

One afternoon last week when I got home from work, Tom announced that he’d bought me a present and that I should wander around the house playing hot or cold to find it. After a relatively short game (we live in a little flat, you only have to say “warmer” about five times in order to direct someone to even the smallest nook and/or cranny) I was beside myself to discover a brand new waffle maker hidden away in his computer desk. Best random getting-home-from-work surprise ever. Naturally, I insisted on making waffles almost immediately. I wanted to start by playing with rye flour because me and rye have kind of a thing going on at the moment. My current bread obsession is Fjord, a loaf you’ll find at any of the Real Patisserie bakeries around town. It’s a gorgeous, dark, seedy, dense loaf that packs more depth and flavour than I ever thought I’d want in a bread. Give it a try, if you live around here, slathered with Marmite. Unf. ¬†Anyway, sorry, that …

Chilli Parsnip Breakfast Fries with Maple Syrup

Chilli Parsnip Breakfast Fries with Maple Syrup

I’ve decided that this is another Christmas brunch recipe. I feel as though it would be appropriate at just about any time of year, but parsnips are in season right now and maple syrup on savoury breakfast food is socially acceptable during the festive period, so this fits comfortably into the Christmas category. If you’re not a fan of spice, you needn’t add any. The parsnips (particularly organic ones) are bursting with lovely flavour as it is, so you won’t find them bland. I’m just a particularly big fan of chilli and maple syrup on the same plate. These would be lovely as part of a great big monstrous breakfast (as an alternative to hash browns or potato waffles or whatever bulky breakfast element you might usually serve when you go all out), but I love them with a fried egg on top. If you’re worried about how healthy these are or are not, might I remind you that it’s almost Christmas? The recipe below serves 1, because I tend to be the only person …

Christmas Toast

I really do hope you’re all cool with me going full speed ahead with the Christmas vibe. I met a lady at Burt’s Homestores today who looked like she was ready to meet her maker as a result of over-exposure to Christmas music so early on, and I’d hate to think that’s what I’m doing to you, my favourite people on the Internet.. Saying that, even if you sent me an email right now begging me for mercy, on your hands and knees asking me to just quit it until December.. I’d probably reply with a Christmas tree emoji and a quote from Elf about somebody needing a hug. I’m just that person, I’m sorry. If you’re as ready as I am to drink that mug of Christmas cheer, slam it down and demand seconds, then you should make this for breakfast over the weekend. If you’re not, then I suggest you pin this recipe and dig it out on December 20th or whenever it is you crazies begin to accept festivity. Posh toast is …
