My Most Popular Recipes of 2017

Yeah, that’s right, my first blog post in a couple of weeks after spending all my time in the pub and dedicating myself to 0% productivity and what do I bounce back with? Recycled content. I’ve got lots of original stuff coming your way over the next few weeks, but I did want to take a moment to capture what worked really well on Cate in the Kitchen this year – even if just to remind myself what it is that you lot really want. That’s what I want this space to be about in 2018. Sharing recipes that interest you, that you’re gonna take one look at and say “that looks cheap and doable and I’m gonna make it on Wednesday after work”. I don’t want my recipes to be aspirational or overly food porny, I want them to be what you work in to your day to day life. This year I’m gonna infiltrate your kitchens more than ever before. That said, what did people seem to love most this year? 1 – Marmite …

Chilli Chicken Soup

It’s cold season, people are coughing and sniffling in office blocks nationwide. It’s gross. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been victim to the pathetic symptoms of the common cold and attempting to self cure with ginger tea and hot honey and lemon; which by the way are both awesome things to be drinking when you’re all bunged up. Despite many attempts by The Chilli Geeks, I will not be coerced into drinking shots of chilli – but I knew I had to get the hot stuff down me somehow because its a world renowned cold-curer.  Another classic home comfort for those burdened with the lurgy is chicken soup, so what better way to give my immune system a boost than turn chicken soup into a bowl of fire? Try this at home if you’re not afraid to let your mouth burn a little – or reduce the chilli content, it’s totally your call. PS – This recipe is Slow Carb Diet friendly. Serves 2 100g leftover roast chicken 80g shelled edamame beans 4 …

Broccoli and Pear Pasta Bake

Yesterday was cheat day, more commonly known as Faturday by the slow carb diet community. Last week, I hadn’t planned for my cheat day and found myself feeling kind of unsatisfied by the end of it all. So I put due care and attention into the carb festival we experienced yesterday and came out the other end wholly pleased with myself. This recipe is not pro healthy balanced diet, but it has a welcome place in the slow carb diet. It’s exactly the spike in carbohydrates that the body needs to reset and continue losing weight the following week (which I think is the whole point of cheat day, but I’m still yet to read the whole book). The bake was inspired by a pasta combo often served at my office canteen, but I’ve poshed it up a bit to ensure optimum decadence. It’ll serve four very greedy people or six sensible portion lovers. 500g cavatappi 50g butter 50g plain flour 600ml whole milk 150g blue cheese (Saint Agur is perfect) 200g extra mature cheddar, grated …
