Jaffa Cakes Bake Off Bake Along

Mary Berry’s Jaffa Cakes | #bakeoffbakealong

Ohhhh it’s so good to be back here. It’s been a whole year since the first time I ever kicked off the bake off bake along on Cate in the Kitchen, knowing that this series is going to gently carry us through into autumn and leave us firmly in front of Christmas makes me happier than I can put into words. Ala and Amanda are once again hosting us all so I want to first say a huge thank you to them, it was so much fun to take part in 2015 and I predict much of the same for this year. I’ll be approaching this blog series in pretty much exactly the same way as I did last year. A quick summary of my thoughts on that weeks show, followed by how I attempted one of the featured bakes. Even when a recipe is my own, I won’t be writing it up here (unless it’s unmissably outstanding) because I want to focus away from recipe development and hone in on the story of each bake. However, …

One Last Fail, for Old Times Sake | #bakeoffbakealong

I, like most of you, am officially mourning the Great British Bake Off. I’m really, truly, properly upset about the fact that Wednesday nights will no longer bring the comforting escapism of competetive baking into my living room. I just checked the TV Guide to see what’s on instead. DIY SOS followed by The Apprentice, lord have mercy on us all, I mean that’s just cruel, isn’t it? Before we talk about the good, there’s something I need to talk about that I’m actually still really pissed about, even though a week has passed since it happened. I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to address it here, because I usually prefer my blog to be a centre of straight up positivity, but I don’t want to let this go unmentioned. The morning after Nadiya’s win was announced, the right wing media and their readers pretty much wrote it off. They took her amazing achievement, and they urinated all over it. They overlooked the genuinely heartwarming build in her confidence throughout the series and the way …

Autumn Made Me Do It | #bakeoffbakealong

I love Flora, in a big way, but it was definitely her turn to be off-skis this week. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from her over the next five years or so, she’s a right one to watch! Disappointed as I am to see her  go, I couldn’t be happier with who’s made it to the final, the best have definitely been saved ’til last. I think my highlight from last weeks show can only be Ian’s well. I couldn’t actually speak, I was so amazed. Not only did he attempt something of sheer genius, he absolutely smashed it. I’m still in absolute awe of the thing. I’ll be honest, after my less than impressive attempt at a showstopper last week, I was kind of intimidated by the actual chocolate work going on in the challenges. So I haven’t really committed to any of them. Instead, I gave into the overwhelming desire I’ve had recently to make pumpkin puree, and use pumpkin pie spice for its original purpose – to add autumn flavour to …
