Food Waste Hacks | Pumpkin

We have a problem ‘Tis the season to waste woeful amounts of pumpkin, according to statistics I’ve read recently. According to The Independent, we throw 18,000 tonnes of edible pumpkin flesh in the bin every Halloween – equating to the weight of 1,500 double decker buses. Hubbub have discovered through their research that if all the edible pumpkins thrown away were to be saved, there’d be enough to make a bowl of pumpkin soup for everyone in Britain. That is really not cool, and we 100% need to do better. infographic from Hubbub So, what do we do about it? It’s kind of a tricky one. I’m absolutely not going to tell you to ditch pumpkin carving in favour of shitty plastic glowing pumpkins that get used for five minutes and spend the rest of eternity static in landfill, because that is a far worse problem in my opinion. I’ve also noticed special ‘carving pumpkins’ on the market now that are built specifically to be wasted – by which I mean their flesh is useless nothingness …

Meat Freak Halloween Burger at Stock Burger Co

Personally, I’m going to be staying firmly inside on Monday night. All the doors will be locked and the curtains shut, and something really really funny will be watched on the telly in an attempt to distract me from the possibility of being brutally attacked by killer clowns. I know some are braver than I and might be on the lookout for something spooky to eat before they hit the town, for them I have just the thing. Stock Burger are new to Brighton seafront as of this year, located right next to Holiday Inn. This October, they launched the Meat Freak – a delicious burger with a charcoal infused bun – to celebrate Halloween. The Stock team spent months working with local craft bakers perfecting the recipe for this bun, and it definitely does the trick (or treat.. badoom boom tsschh..). It’s almost cakey in texture, closer to a brioche than a regular bun, but it’s aesthetic effect was most impressive, it’s perfect for celebrating the scariest night of the year. The burger itself …

Purple Carrot + Golden Beet Tahini Salad

Earlier this week, we talked about purple carrots because I was obsessed with their suitability for Halloween. I figured that seeing as you’d gone to the trouble of reading about them, I should probably give you a little extra inspiration as to how you might use them. Please don’t be put off by the word salad. There’s not a hint of summer lightness in this recipe, I promise. It’s all about that room temperature roasted beet vibe, the warm and cosy flavours of autumn. I very much like the idea of eating this on Halloween before consuming preposterous amounts of sweets and chocolate. I mean in reality I’m an adult and Halloween is a Saturday so I’m probably not going to eat all that much candy but I will drink a terrifying amount, and alcohol is full of sugar. So. Tahini makes for the most creamy dressing, I’ve been completely in love with it for quite some time. Golden beetroot, however, is new to me. It arrived in my Abel & Cole box last week (read more on …
