Marzipan Date Porridge

This year – for the first time in my life – I hosted Christmas at my flat. On Christmas Eve Eve, four pints deep with my best friend, it suddenly hit me that I hadn’t got in the ingredients to make marzipan dates for my Mum (her favourite, and therefore a festive essential). Cue my insisting that we leave the pub immediately to get to the supermarket before it closed and rectify my fatal mistake. After all that, it will surprise nobody to learn that on Christmas Day I was on the prosecco from the very moment I woke up and neglected to remember that marzipan and medjool dates were awaiting my attention in the kitchen drawer. Daughter of the year. There they both sat, where I rediscovered them last month and added them to my breakfast. Once again my defective personality has led me to something delicious. The universe works in mysterious ways. Notes on serving: all porridge is, for me, at the moment, incomplete without the addition of toasted nuts and natural yoghurt. …

Stollen Cookies

Stollen Cookies

If you’re a follower of my Instagram stories (quick plug, they’re great, get ’em by following me on Instagram) then you’ll know that I’ve spent much of November wandering around supermarkets to ogle at their Christmas food. I love that about this time of year, there’s just so much to look at. I like to imagine that there are special festive food task forces that sit around in meetings all year round thinking this stuff up (for the record, I think that would probably be my dream job). So excellent, in fact, that I decided they needed to happen in my kitchen. Stollen has always been present at the Christmas dinner table in my family. It’s the disgustingly stodgy, cream soaked dessert that makes absolutely no sense to eat after an enormous dinner but we go ahead and do it anyway. I never …

Marzipancakes with Blueberry Maple Syrup and Toasted Coconut

This post is in collabz with Seasonal Berries Happy my birthday month to you! We pushed through January together like absolute soldiers, and if you’re reading this then you too have made it through to the other side. The happier side, the side that’s just a little closer to spring and sunshine and, most notably in my world, the side on which I turn 21.. On February 13th, I will reach an age that makes it impossible for me to argue that people who refer to me as an adult are wrong. At 18 the world is all like ‘whatever, you can drink, call me when you’ve spent three hours on hold to HMRC and we’ll talk’. The years after that all blur together in a late teen but not-quite-proper-actual-grownup haze. But I think now, at this point, I’ve just got to accept it. This is adulthood. I’ve arrived, and I can’t leave. We can talk more about the sense of impending doom that I already feel about the passing of time a little closer to …
