Lets talk about sides (baby)

It’s nearing BBQ Season for the braver souls here in the UK, and I’m not about to tell you that chicken wings and burgers are going to boost your metabolism. So to join in the BBQ vibe yet remain in the constraints of this week’s theme, I thought I’d share an exceedingly healthy side dish that you can add to your delicious rack of ribs and know that you’re consuming something of use to your body. Homemade coleslaw This recipe was inspired by the most amazing take away joint ever to exist, Pizzaface. If you’re lucky enough to be a citizen of Brighton, too, you have to try this place. In a nutshell, it’s beyond restaurant quality pizza delivered right to your house. Anyway, they do this great seasonal coleslaw that’s herby and crunchy and delicious so I’ve tried to recreate it, pretty successfully I might add. Coleslaw is notoriously fattening because it contains a few artery clogging ingredients – namely full fat cream, so this recipe calls for 0% yoghurt (the brand I use …

Green Tea, Melon and Ginger Cocktail

Before I begin with the details of this recipe, I will admit that I am not a fan of Green Tea, I tried it when the hype began and it just wasn’t my cup of tea (excuse the pun – actually don’t excuse the pun it’s a great pun.) So when approaching the task of creating this recipe I was somewhat apprehensive, but I promise hand on heart that this tastes fantastic. The reason I forced the challenge of green tea upon myself is, of course, this week’s theme: metabolism boosters. Having done a little research on ingredients that really get the metabolism in gear, I literally could not escape it, it appears everywhere you look. Countless studies have been made to work out what’s going on in that mug, it contains caffeine which in itself has been proven to increase metabolic rates, and the antioxidant catechin – those two working together appears to be what’s making the magic happen. You can learn more about the benefits of green tea from our beloved National Health …

The Allotment: April Edition

As I mentioned in a previous post, this household is blessed with an allotment owner. I will openly admit in case my mother is reading this that it is only on a very rare and special occasion that I’ll actually show my face there, but I am always more than happy to take advantage of its produce. What’s in season this month If something is in season during April, you’ve got much better chances of finding it UK grown from the supermarket, so if you’re conscious of food miles look out for these: Cabbage Cauliflower Celeriac Lettuce (just barely) New Potatoes Pak Choi Pepper Purple Sprouting Broccoli Radishes Spinach Spring Greens Watercress What’s growing on the plot this month An abundance of herbs, an immeasurable amount of green things, and one of my all time favourite things to ever grow in the ground, rhubarb.   This afternoon armfuls of delicious organic goods were brought home along with our tired but still somehow manically hyperactive Border Terrier, Molly. The rhubarb has already been stewed, the herbs …
