Review | The Chilli Pickle Set Menu

I worry that I’m becoming notorious for not having been to all the really cool places that come highly recommended by Brighton’s biggest food enthusiasts. I’ve been insanely late to the party with pretty much all notable restaurants in this city, and I still haven’t made it to most of them. This was, believe it or not, my first ever visit to The Chilli Pickle. I am, however, beginning to develop a taste for eating out like never before – which perhaps has something to do with how much I enjoy the company of my partner in crime – so reviews are set to become a bigger part of Cate in the Kitchen than they have been previously. Anyway, enough about my inadequacies, you’re here to learn more about The Chilli Pickle. After smaller beginnings in Meeting House Lane, they’ve been at their larger Jubilee Square venue for three years now and done very well there indeed. They’re multi award winning, and literally just last night won the Indian episode of Best British Takeaways. In short: they’re a …

Review | Afternoon Tea at The Salt Room

The Salt Room has been a permanent fixture on Brighton seafront for two years now. It’s a successful second endeavour from the team behind The Coal Shed, highly esteemed steak restaurant on Boyce’s St. Unlike its sister restaurant, The Salt Room has a heavy focus on seafood, so their take on afternoon tea was bound to be a unique one. We stopped by yesterday afternoon to give it a try, here’s what went down. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by a delightfully sunny member of the front of house staff who checked our coats, told us how amazing everybody thinks the afternoon tea is and led us to our table (naturally lit with a sea view, an Instagrammer’s wet dream). A waiter soon appeared to offer us water, then let us get settled before returning to explain how the menu works. You can find a copy of the menu here. Essentially, the only two choices you’re making is which of the savoury options to omit (there are 5 and you’re allotted 4 – this …

Review | Porthmeor Beach Cafe

I’ve been updating you here and there on our antics in St. Ives (which, sadly, are over) by giving you highlights spread across one or two days. I began to write a third update including the Porthmeor Beach Cafe but decided it was far too important and needed a post all of its own. It’s not often that I review restaurants, mostly because I eat out so rarely in favour of cooking at home, but I think if somebody Googles “the best restaurant in St. Ives” I really, really want them to find this place. Therefore felt it my duty to write about it. We arrived, slightly tipsy from one or two cocktails at The Rum and Crab Shack at 6pm. I know, 6pm is a hideously uncool time to eat dinner at a restaurant but it was the only slot we could nab for one of the stunning outdoor booths. It was really very tricky to capture the magic of our table on my iPhone, but I tried my very best.. Beautifully (naturally) lit, clean, …
