Beer, Marmite + Black Treacle Gravy

Whether we like it or not, autumn fast approaches. In a matter of weeks, the only thing keeping you going Monday to Saturday will be the promise of your Sunday roast. Coupled perhaps with a Gilmore Girls marathon and a thimbleful or two of whisky to push down the deep sense of injustice that boils up the back of your throat each time you remember that we went in to lockdown last winter, sat inside through heatwaves, weren’t allowed to go on holiday and now here we are on the wrong side of the year once more… but I digress. This has been my go-to gravy for a couple of months now, I won’t make anything else. It’s particularly handy because it doesn’t rely on meat juices, so fits the bill when I’m making veggie roasts (as I’m often inclined to do). It’s deeply savoury and packs a punch of intense flavour – particularly delicious with cauliflower cheese. I struggled (as per) to get this one written down because I’m such a by-eye cook and …

Happy Sunday

I’m back in England. Boo. Hoo. I’ve had the holiday blues from the moment I stepped off that ferry. It may have a lot to do with the fact that as soon as you alight a ferry from Dieppe, you find yourself in Newhaven (it’s an absolute shithole, we can’t very well beat around that bush). It may also have something to do with the hangover that was soon to kick in because we got incredibly drunk off £3 white wine from the ferry shop that we weren’t technically supposed to drink on the ferry. However, the holiday blues have failed at overshadowing my baseline level of happiness as a result of the lovely time we had in France together. We celebrated two birthdays and Valentines Day and not a thing went wrong, it was the perfect trip. It even had the perfect ending, just look at how beautiful everything was as we pulled out of the ferry port.. I know I’ve overused the word perfect already but truly, that’s what it was. I’m struggling …

Sunday Roast at The Geese Pub Brighton

Happy Sunday

I’ve been a little bit out of sorts this week. Exhibit A: today I didn’t eat anything at all until 4pm. Exhibit B: I have not tweeted in 16 hours, and I’ve only tweeted three times in the last two days. I’m alarmed, are you alarmed? Also the home screen button on my iPhone broke. I’m just a hot mess at the moment, bear with me. Apparently, a third of us are eating less meat. This pleases me. Viva la small, slow and steady revolution. It’s nice to go a little deeper sometimes, and these 40 words for emotions you’ve felt but couldn’t explain totally took me there. I talk about This American Life a lot around here, and that’s because I think it genuinely makes me a better person to look into the lives of human beings once a week. This podcast is a gift, and if you’re not already on board, please consider changing that. On repeat this week: baby makin’ music c/o Aluna George. I’ve started a few of my days …
